Flock Theatre in Hampton: “Animal Farm”

May 19, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Flock Theatre will perform Animal Farm, May 19, 2017, at the Hampton Community Center at 7:30 PM. Based in New London, the troupe has become well known for their imaginative use of puppets, masks, and similar dramatic props. Hampton residents will remember the lifesize puppets in The Tempest and shadow puppets in Macbeth. “Animal Farm” brings us puppets and masks to augment the actors’ performances. Admission is free.

Due to a recent controversy over George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” being taught in certain CT schools, Flock Theatre has been inspired to produce a “readers theatre” version of the novel by Nelson Bond. Combining mask, narration, puppetry, and a strong story telling style, Flock’s production explores the allegory of communism, fear, revisionist ideology, and suppression. The story is a fable that takes place on a farm where the animals have overthrown their cruel human owner in order to govern themselves. Their revolution is short-lived and spirals into a nightmare of disillusionment run by “even more ruthless autocrats: the greedy, cunning pigs.”

The performance is free for attendees, thanks to support from the Town Board of Selectmen and a REGI arts grant facilitated by WindhamArts and funded by the State of Connecticut and the National Endowment for the Arts.
