2017 marks another milestone for Booklovers’ Gourmet in Webster, MA as they celebrate their 22nd year in business. An independent bookstore, coffee house & gift shop, Booklovers’ Gourmet opened in early March of 1995 by owner and operator Debra Horan, a Webster native and graduate of The Rhode Island School of Design. From the outset, Debra envisioned a gathering place where people would meet, enjoy good books, local art, poetry & music in a cozy, inviting space while sipping on a cappuccino and homemade pastry. In its original location at 55 East Main Street, Booklovers’ Gourmet carries a wide array of new & used books as well as hand selected gift items, many made in the USA or by local crafters, including pottery, garden & home decor, jewelry, candles, incense and greeting cards. One of the more popular lines is children’s educational puzzles & toys by “Melissa & Doug”. Monthly book discussion groups, writers groups, author readings & signings, workshops and artist receptions also take place. “One of my main goals in running this type of community-based business is to offer cultural opportunities for everyone to enjoy right here in Webster. I feel it is an invaluable experience to have the space to meet with others and be exposed to different ideas and viewpoints”, said Ms. Horan. In addition to hosting regular events with local, regional and national authors, another important aspect of the business is to showcase the work of local and student artists throughout the year. Booklovers’ Gourmet has been a member of trade organizations The American Booksellers Association and The New England Booksellers Association since 1995. Locally, Debra is also president of The Webster Dudley Business Alliance.
The store has an extensive children’s selection of new and used books including Newbery and Caldecott Award winners. “I work closely with the local schools and libraries and we have developed a mutually beneficial relationship over the years”, Debra stated.
Special sales and events are planned to mark the occasion and thank the community for their ongoing support. The celebration will take place all day on Saturday, March 4th with special discounts, giveaways and raffles from 10a.m.-5 p.m. Of course, there will also be birthday cake!
Winter hours for Booklovers’ Gourmet are Tuesday-Friday 10-6:30, Saturday 10-5.
