Outdoor Adventures 101: Learning the Map and Compass

September 23 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

While GPS has recently become a very popular navigational tool, maps and compasses have been used for generations. They weigh next to nothing and don’t rely on batteries! Even if you rely heavily on a GPS for navigation, a traditional compass is an indispensable backup. Knowing how to use a map and compass to find your way in the woods is an essential skill.
This program is intended for the recreational hiker who has little to no experience working with a compass or reading a topographic map. Jim Bancroft, a graduate of Goodwin’s Master Naturalist program, will teach about compass components, compass bearings, correcting for magnetic declination, how to orient a map and use it with a compass, topographic maps, map symbols, reading contour lines, and recognizing landforms. Most of this program will be hands-on and out-of-doors. Compasses will be available to borrow.
Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Donations are encouraged.
Pre-registration is not required unless otherwise noted.
