PUTNAM HISTORY HIKE

January 12 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Last Green Valley and Boy Scout Troop 21 of Putnam will be hosting a history hike through downtown Putnam for Scouts and the public on Saturday, January 12. Starting at 10:00 a. m. at the bandstand in Rotary Park, Putnam Town Historian Bill Pearsall will be showing off the living history of Putnam that many people never notice nor appreciate.

The free program will take two hours and cover about 3.5 miles, ending at noon where it begins, at Rotary Park. The public is encouraged to attend. Just show up; registration is not required.

Participants will see and learn the history of, among other things, Cargill Falls, one of the first cotton mills in New England, the former Morse Mansion, the Rhodesville neighborhood, the spot where the former Putnam Technical High School once stood, the building that once held Putnam’s first hospital, what used to be on Main Street, the site of a devastating 1960s fire, the heroism of Putnam’s only Medal of Honor recipient and Putnam’s downtown before the 1955 flood washed it away.

The rain date is Saturday, January 19, at the same time.

For more information, call Troop 21 Scoutmaster John Ryan at (860) 928-7241 and leave a message.
