Sailors’ Valentines were not given for Valentine’s Day, but rather as mementos from sailors who had returned home from the West Indies. Valentines are often given as reminders of one’s love to another, and Sailors Valentines were no different. Spurred by a shell-collecting mania among the English, sailors’ valentines were very popular gifts. Almost always octagonal wooden boxes, filled with mosaics of usually shells, these gifts were highly collectible souvenir items.

We will make our own sailors’ valentines from wood and shells and explore other items made from natural materials in the Village’s collections.
