Migration to Massachusetts: Economic Opportunity for Italians in Southbridge, 1910-1945

October 24 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Professor Teresa Fava Thomas, of Fitchburg State University will present a program on her research of the Italian community in Southbridge and their prosperity in the first half of the 1900s. The presentation will examine the diaspora from Palestrina (Lazio) and Teramo (Abruzzo) in central Italy to Southbridge, Massachusetts, and the transition from immigrants to citizens.  It will also examine their experience in the 1920s and 1930s at the Hamilton Woolen Mill and American Optical factory as they learned English in workplace educational programs and made the transition from immigrants to citizens.  The talk will examine the impact of education on the economic empowerment of Italian immigrants in Southbridge which proceeded faster than in other areas of Massachusetts and look at Palestrina from the era of migration to today.

Dr. Thomas is the author of The Reluctant Migrants: Migration from the Veneto to Central Massachusetts 1880-1920. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing, after the event. Free
