Village Earth Week

April 20, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 9:30 am, repeating until April 23, 2023

Seed, sow, celebrate! Join us during Village Earth Week for a wide variety of talks, walks, workshops, and activities related to nature, ecology, stewardship, and our climate. In an age where global warming is an imminent threat, it is important to look at climate change with a critical eye towards history. Come and visit our gardeners and farmers to learn about how they are preparing the fields and gardens in the spring planting season. Think about how our environment in New England has changed and how that has impacted what and how we grow our plants. This week will feature a different theme each day:

Wednesday, April 19th – The Changing Climate

What is climate change and how does it impact humans and the environment? Throughout the day join OSV’s interpreters to learn the differences between weather and climate, how climate has changed from the 19th century to today, and the history of the environmental movement.

Thursday, April 20th – 19th Century Issues

Even in the 19th century, the climate was a challenge for farmers and gardeners. Learn about how people in the 19th century adapted when the weather made growing food difficult. See the different ways families were able to preserve their food year-round, and what they did when produce was running low.

Friday, April 21st – Modern Day Issues

Join us today to discuss these issues, such as extreme weather conditions, changing growing seasons, and pollution. Also, get an insider’s look into how OSV combats these issues and adapts our interpretation of the 19th century into a 21st-century landscape.

Saturday, April 22nd – OSV Celebrates Earth Day!

Join OSV in celebrating Earth Day! Take a walk through our woods, learn about beekeeping, and chat with gardeners about sustainable practices. See if you can help our gardeners and farmers prepare for the growing season ahead. Enjoy the outdoors as we celebrate the Earth!

Sunday, April 23rd – Moving Forward

Today is all about the positive changes humans can make to the environment. Learn about the ways we can combat climate change and how to adapt to the new environment of the 21st century. Talk about environmental stewardship, the best plants for pollinators, and how to plan for the extremes of today’s climate.
