Blue Flag Meadow Hike

 10/23/2022 @ 10:00 am

Blue Flag Meadow, named for the native iris that blooms along the pond edges, is a 90-acre mostly wooded parcel that includes a large pond and 12 acres of herbaceous fields. It is managed primarily for wildlife with an eye towards Connecticut’s least common habitats: very young and very old forests. Since 2018 it has been enrolled in a cooperative management program called the Young Forest Initiative, sponsored by the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Wildlife Management Institute. A 9-acre timber harvest to regenerate young forest and a significant invasive plant control effort have been part of this program. On a 1.2-mile hike around the pond and property we’ll discuss the results of this work to date, as well as the older growth areas and the pond. Sponsored by the Eastern Connecticut Forest Landowners Association & Wolf Den Land Trust, ecfla.org
