Cape Verdean History of Norwich

 9/17/2023 @ 1:00 pm

From the late 19th Century, immigrants from the islands of Cape Verde formed a small but vital community in Norwich, CT. Most lived or grew up in one or two Cape Verdean communities, Talman Street and Sunnyside Avenue. The Cape Verdean community spoke a distinct Cape Verdean Kriolu, made the music of their islands, jazz & ragtime and made Norwich home with the construction of St. Anthony Chapel, built by immigrant Joseph Candido Delgado & baptized July 4, 1926, and the establishment of the Cape Verdean Santiago Society Club June 6, 1939, where Cape Verdeans gathered with their families. Registration required online at norwichhistoricalsociety.org. Sponsored by Cape Verdean Santiago Society Inc.
