Discover the Nipmuc Lithic Trail

 9/24/2022 @ 11:00 am

Native Americans in the Nipmuc Territory surrounding Webster and northeast Connecticut left tangible artifacts, called lithic structures, and some can be found today in our fields and woods. Examples are cairns, chambers, anthropomorphic stone art and weirs. Joseph Iamartino will present evidence, photographic and from written history, of the purpose of these historic structures. Enthusiasts are working diligently to document the remaining structures. Hear the latest finds and efforts to preserve these treasures. Mr. Iamartino is the long-time president of the Thompson Historical Society and a guide at the Samuel Slater Experience. He has presented many historic talks at New England universities, high schools, and museums on Native American, railroad, wire & cable and early mill history for three decades. He is the editor of Echoes of Old Thompson Volumes I and II and the soon-to-be released Volume III. Finally, he is a long time member of NEARA, a group dedicated to lithic research. The lecture is free and will be given at 11 am and 1 pm today. Tours of the Samuel Slater Experience are available for the normal ticket price.
