The Amazing Gravestone Carvers of the South Cemetery in Pomfret

 10/22/2022 @ 12:30 pm

The Pomfret Cemetery Corporation is presenting a workshop on the remarkable gravestone carvers represented in the early burial plots. The workshop will be led by Ruth Shapleigh Brown (New England Gravestone Network), Keegan Day (Rediscovering History Inc.), and Donna Dufresne, local historian. Participants will learn about the funerary art and symbolism as well as the artistic traits of certain carvers, the stones and quarries they used, and the social history gleaned from the carvings and epitaphs. Ruth Shapleigh Brown will demonstrate techniques for deciphering the script on the stones as well as cleaning and removing lichen. Walking is easy in grassy terrain in the South Cemetery and ancient burial ground. Participants will move around the cemetery. There is no seating provided.
