Flora and Geology Hike at Flynt Quarry

 6/01/2024 @ 10:00 am

Join Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary Director of Applied Ecology, Dan Wilder, and Opacum Director, Leslie Duthie, for an exploration of the flora and geology of Flynt Quarry. The woods are full of scrub oak, blueberry and some unusual species. This quarry is the source of ‘Monson granite’ and the quarry supplied granite for buildings from Monson to Amherst and Boston, New York City, Saratoga Springs and as far as Chicago, Iowa and Kansas. Signs of the quarry work still exist today.

**Please Note: This is a moderately strenuous hike over rocky, hilly terrain, which requires rock scrambling on narrow shelves. The walk will last about 2 hours.

PLEASE RSVP here: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/OVINrVFWPNRL0bqqibNM7A as space is limited for the walk (20 people). Rain date – June 8th @ 10 AM

The hike will leave from the Flynt Quarry trail head on Margaret St in Monson, near the Monson High School.
