Come and meet longtime residents of Voluntown, Connecticut in their natural setting! After all, Pachaug State Forest, the largest State Forest in Connecticut, covers nearly 70% of Voluntown. Join us at Chapman Field in the Forest to enjoy a little lunch, a little hike, and a lot of discussions and displays about the history and natural features that make this town unique. Learn how Voluntown (the only place in the world named Voluntown) got its name. Walk through an example of the Pachaug / Great Meadow National Natural Landmark! Learn how both natural and man-made processes disturb forest succession and help diversify the habitats. We will have tables, chairs, shade and exhibits set up in the Field from 10 am until 2 pm. Come and enjoy discussions, partake of lunch as our treat and walk an easy, guided 2 mile loop hike through the Cedar Swamp Trail viewing some outstanding and rare plants and habitats. End up the hike strolling through the grounds of the CCC Camp Lonergan (active 1933 to 1942) and appreciate how the labors of the CCC men helped to make this a wonderful place to live, work and enjoy the outdoors.
