 10/05/2024 @ 10:00 am

Walking tour of Tantiusques, the Sturbridge Graphite Mine, and the nearby Robert Crowd Archaeological Site with Ed Hood, Executive Director, Norcross Wildlife Foundation. Tantiusques (“tan-te-us-quays”) was the site of one of New England’s first mines. The mine was in its heyday in the late 1700s and the 1800s. Robert Crowd, a man of mixed Native American and African American ancestry, was a foreman at the mine and lived nearby. The foundation of his family’s house and barn is still visible. This is a state property overseen by the Trustees of Reservations. The tour will include some moderately difficult off-trail, rough terrain, walking. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Registration required. Sponsored by Sturbridge Historical Society. Find them on Facebook.
