Night Flyers – Bats!

Join TLGV for Night Flyers — Bats! on July 20 at the Lyon Preserve, Pomfret, CT. The Acorn Adventure for families begins at 6:30 pm and the TLGV Adventure for adults begins at 7 pm.

Bats are one of the most amazing, yet misunderstood creatures living in The Last Green Valley. Bats devour night-flying insects considered pests to us, have great nighttime vision and hunt by echolocation. As the only true flying mammal on earth, bats are a critical part of the ecosystem, but 8 of the 9 bat species in The Last Green Valley are endangered. You can learn more about these amazing creatures in a night full of bat inspired fun and activity at Lyon Preserve, a known bat roost.

At 6:30 pm we start with kid-friendly programs, including bat games and crafts.

At 7 pm we’ll be joined by Wildlife Biologist Devaughn Fraser, PhD, from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Devaughn will explain the importance of bats and why so many of them are endangered, as well as show how the state is using extremely sensitive equipment for recording bat echolocation calls to determine bat populations. We’ll also help Devaughn count the bats as they leave the roost.
