Join Chief Ranger Bill Reid for our annual “First Day of Spring” Vernal Equinox hike and kick off to TLGV’s Spring Outdoors program. This year we’ll make the trek to Breakneck Pond at Bigelow State Park in Union. The hike will be approximately 4 miles round trip. Acorn Adventure – Letterboxing 101

Do you like to be outside? Do you like to search for treasure? Letterboxing is a family-friendly hobby that gets you outside to follow the clues and find the treasure, a hand-carved stamp that you can add to your personal log book. Acorns will get an introduction to letterboxing and their own letterboxing kits, which will include a starter logbook, an inkpad and the chance to make a personal stamp. Come learn about the High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) and how it relates to individual ability or disability needs. Stroll or roll along the trails of Killingly River Trail as we demonstrate the equipment and discuss how mobility-challenged users can select trails to get outside and enjoy The Last Green Valley. Old Furnace State Park has excellent hiking through mix hardwood and conifer forests with well-marked blue and orange blazed trails. The highlight of the park is a beautiful eastward vista from 200 foot high Half Hill cliffs overlooking Furnace Pond (also known as Upper Ross Pond). Boat launch at 16 Kennedy Drive, Putnam, CT. The Quinebaug River provides scenic paddling through exceptional habitat. This stretch of the river has some quick-water with flat-water sections as well. It is 5.5 miles downstream to the take-out location on Route 101 in Pomfret. Paddlers must have their own kayak or canoe and PFD (personal floatation device).
